You or the young carer may not realise how much caring they are doing at home as it is often something young people do as they want to help, and they may feel it is what families do – support each other.
Helping out can sometimes take up quite a lot of time and take time away from having fun with friends, doing homework, and getting to school on time. It can sometimes cause stress for the young carers and tension in their relationships with family members. It can also affect mental health and well-being.
It can be hard to admit that the young person is caring. However, it is important to recognise the great support they undertake and recognise this may mean they need some of their support.
